DEVELOPING BASIC DIGITALS
As we are now moving to the digital world, we need to develop some basic digital skills which we can use in teaching our future students. It does not replace the basic literacies like 3R’s, but it will just added to equip students for their success in the millennial world.
Solution fluency
Solution fluency
This refers to the capacity and creativity in problem solving. It tells on how we think properly to solve a problem. It requires whole brain thinking and design the appropriate solution.
Information fluency
The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically.
Collaboration fluency
This refers to teamwork with virtual or real partners in the online environment. There is virtual interaction in social networking and online gaming domains.
Media fluency
Media refer to channels of mass communication (radio, television, magazines, advertising, graphic arts) or digital sources.
Creativity fluency
Fluency (also called volubility and loquaciousness) is the property of a person or of a system that delivers information quickly and with expertise.
Digital ethics
The digital citizen is guided by principles of leadership, global responsibility, environment awareness global citizens and personal accountability.
As teaching with the integration of technology is highly needed in the teaching profession nowadays, a need to develop student’s skills is also highly required. Why? Because teaching is more effective when what teachers ought to teach matches the needed skills. However, with this changes, it doesn't mean that the three (3) basic literacies will be replaced (3's, reading, writing and 'rithmetic). Instead, they will be complemented by the six essential skills which will help students to cope up with the millennial world. It includes solution fluency, information fluency, collaboration fluency, media fluency, creativity fluency and the digital ethics. Aside from that, the higher thinking skills were also specified in the report. It centered on introduction of a new framework based on Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking Skills which would help digital learners a lot.
REFLECTION
Personally, I am checked and reminded again on the need to complement your learning with the necessary digital skills and so your students could effectively function in the learning process. It is not just more on letting your students do everything without even thinking of particular or specific skills to focus and develop. Integration of technology plus developing digital skills equals to productive and interactive learning. And so as a future educator, I should be able to do the same in order to create a more meaningful learning to the students. It is not just an option, rather a necessity.
