Lesson 6

DEVELOPING BASIC DIGITALS

As we are now moving to the digital world, we need to develop some basic digital skills which we can use in teaching our future students.  It does not replace the basic literacies like 3R’s, but it will just added to equip students for their success in the millennial world.

Solution fluency

This refers to the capacity and creativity in problem solving. It tells on how we think properly to solve a problem. It requires whole brain thinking and design the appropriate solution.

Information fluency

The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically.

Collaboration fluency

This refers to teamwork with virtual or real partners in the online environment. There is virtual interaction in social networking and online gaming domains.

Media fluency

Media refer to channels of mass communication (radio, television, magazines, advertising, graphic arts) or digital sources.

Creativity fluency

Fluency (also called volubility and loquaciousness) is the property of a person or of a system that delivers information quickly and with expertise.

Digital ethics

The digital citizen is guided by principles of leadership, global responsibility, environment awareness global citizens and personal accountability.

As teaching with the integration of technology is highly needed in the teaching profession nowadays, a need to develop student’s skills is also highly required. Why? Because teaching is more effective when what teachers ought to teach matches the needed skills. However, with this changes, it doesn't mean that the three (3) basic literacies will be replaced (3's, reading, writing and 'rithmetic). Instead, they will be complemented by the six essential skills which will help students to cope up with the millennial world. It includes solution fluency, information fluency, collaboration fluency, media fluency, creativity fluency and the digital ethics. Aside from that, the higher thinking skills were also specified in the report. It centered on introduction of a new framework based on Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking Skills which would help digital learners a lot.

REFLECTION

Personally, I am checked and reminded again on the need to complement your learning with the necessary digital skills and so your students could effectively function in the learning process. It is not just more on letting your students do everything without even thinking of particular or specific skills to focus and develop. Integration of technology plus developing digital skills equals to productive and interactive learning. And so as a future educator, I should be able to do the same in order to create a more meaningful learning to the students. It is not just an option, rather a necessity.

Lesson 5

Preferences of the Technology Generation

In education, it is important that critical differences in perceptions between old and young which create a generation gap need to be discussed. The traditional education system gives priority to independent learning, prior to participation work. New learners, however, are already acquainted with digital tools that adopt to both personal and participation work. Old teachers teach students in order to help them pass tests and complete the course requirement. On the other hand, the new digital learners simply wish to acquire skills, knowledge and habits as windows of opportunity afford them to learn. In sum, teachers need to connect with digital learners, and not think of them as entering their past-30 year’s old traditional world.
As a student we are so resourceful when it comes in our education we want a fastest reference in our research that’s why we use technology on it and my mother always telling me that in their time there is no such technology that involve in their studies they always go to library when they research and she also compare our learning to them if we really learn of what we did.  I realized that my mother is right it is too different if we try to depend on the internet because we just copy and paste the idea of others we did not internalized the thoughts of it. But, if we search in the books it surely help us to become a good learner. I am not discriminating the technology I’m just telling if what is the effect on it if we over use the beauty of this technology in our life.

APPLICATION

Being a teacher, it is our duty to help our student understand the beauty of education. We should help them to be a responsible citizens not just in the four corners of a classroom but most especially in the real arena of this world. We should take advantage of this technology to help them learn more but we should also put a limitations on it we should not over use technology because  it has a bad effect to our students they become irresponsible men. Be blessed to be part of this 21st century because a lot of change happened that gives life more colorful.

Lesson 4

BRIDGING THE GENERATION GAP

The older generation often feels there is a generation gap between them and the younger generation. This is apparent simple things like the manner of dressing, socializing, more intimate relationships like friendship and marrying. In the field of education, a huge generation gap also exists and it will continue to widen unless some changes are adopted at the proper time. In peasant third world continues where schools don’t have the technology facilities, it is understandable that transition to digital education may take time. But given the rapid emergence of digital technology (ICT), there is the need to prepare for bridging the digital gap in society. First, we need to understand the potentials of ICT:

  •  The new network of instantaneous  communication is global, overcoming borders between countries and continents.
  •  Much of what elders believe may not be applicable anymore to the new generations
  • Alvin Toffler’s book, Future Shock, shows how the information age has begun to create many cultural changes

Since the new generations are expected to face a future professionalism challenge of a digital world ahead of them, technology-supported skills need to be taught in schools today, or else schools will become a white elephant. If schools fail to respond to emergent changes and needs, new learners may lose appreciation of the educational system, and drop out of school, as surveys show an increasing drop-out rate every year.

REFLECTION

This lesson is all about the differences of each generation. It also discussed if how the new generations help the older generations to overcome the generation gap. There are lots of differences between the old generation and new generation. In terms of dressing, socializing, relationships and especially in educational system. There are big changes that the older generation can’t easily accept and adapt. But, since, with the help of new generations, the generation gap can be solved. Since the new generations are expected to face the future professional challenge of a digital world.

APPLICATION

As future educators we should know how to help older generations to overcome the changes of the instructional technologies. We must open our mind that we new generations are the bridge of understanding the use of modern technologies. Nowadays, in order to make things easier, efficient and effective, updated technologies are very essential. It is also said that in order to achieve things, we should know how to understand, but understanding without action is nothing. Therefore, let’s make a move to solve the generation gap, new and old generations must be aware and equipped on how to use and manipulate updated technologies because obsolete instructional technologies will never help to develop the learning of each generation.

Lesson 3

UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY LEARNERS

Today’s learners appear smarter, yet they can’t read as their parents do and they are addicted to the Internet.

 Addicted in Internet

The  new generation of the 21st millennium is not the kind of learner that they were, but are information technology or digital learners.

Lest the concern for new learners is not well understood, it serves to know what scientists say, as follows:

1. There are positive benefits derived from the use of information technology or digital resources and these counterbalance possible negative effects of technology on children.

Positive Benefits Using IT

2.  Daily exposure to high technology-personal computers, video game gadgets, cell       phones, Internet search, sites-stimulates the brain by strengthening and creating  neural circuits.

Exposure to High Technology

3.  A current technological revolution is creating an intellectual revolution, faster and better than ever before

Lesson 2

AN OVERVIEW: EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY 2

Educational Technology 2 is concerned with integrating technology into teaching and learning. It focuses on introducing, supplementing and extending the technology and skills to learners so that they can become exemplary user’s of educational technology. One of the goal of educational technology is to help the target learners to weave technology with software (computer learning materials) to become a natural extension on their learning tools.

Educational technology 2 involves a deeper understanding of the computer as well as hands on application of computer skills. It enhancing teaching and learning through technology integration. The aims of this are: To infuse technology in the students- teachers training. Helping them to adapt and meet the rapid and continuing technological changes, particularly in thriving global information and communication technology (ICT) environment.

REFLECTION

I have learned that learning this kind of topic is very useful in our country and it also be a great use for professional teacher, school administrator, teacher educators and in fact anyone who is interested on how information technology can be use to improve not only in instruction but also in the management program curriculum. Through this I have learned that using technology can be a great help for us. It can also help us to discover some inventions for the preparation for the next generation.

APPLICATION

This topic can be applied in many aspects of living. Say for instance, it can be use by the persons that was mentioned above. Technology as what we know can be use in many aspects particularly in the classroom management, teaching instruction ,business man, teachers, and students and so on. If we only know how to use it properly and to whom can be use it, it can really change our lives. Through the knowledge that was given by this topic it can help us to be expose to the next generation.

Lesson 1

A REVIEW FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY 1

The Educational Technology 1 (ET1) as a subject opened the way for pre-service teachers in the world of educational technology. This course made them aware, appreciative and equipped about the use of educational technology tools not just the traditional ones but also the modern educational media. It started with the review of the history of educational technology, quality education and the roles of ET in the 21st Century. It made them recognize that the use of educational technology is already a common trend happening in the society.
Because ET is to be applied in instruction, ET 1 showed the four phases of ET application in the teaching-learning process which are:

  •   setting of learning objectives,
  •    designing specific learning experiences,
  •  evaluating the effectiveness of the learning experiences/learning objectives
  •  revision as needed of the whole teaching-learning process or its elements to improve
  •  future instructional activities.

With these, ET 1 tried to orient the pre-service teachers of the possible dehumanizing effect of technology into the society such as ideological propaganda, pornography, financial fraud etc. because unfortunately, these dangers, are continually affecting the peoples' cultures and it even widens the gap between rich and the poor countries.

REFLECTION:

Educational Technology 1 indeed provided us not just window but an open door for us to see that the educational world has already evolved from what we term as "Traditional Era of just Chalk-and-Board". The course showed us that educational technology can be utilized as media in different avenues of the teaching-learning process. To cite some example, the use of softwares like Wondershare Quiz Maker can be a powerful tool in assessing students' learning in a very interactive manner. Another is the utilization of  PhotoStory Application in preparing a full-blown topic in a form of Digital Story Telling using still images and voice records plus background music in delivering interactive instruction. The introduction of the guidelines in making a good PowerPoint Presentation greatly aided the often misuse of the application. In addition, the use of hyperlinks improved our skills in making quality PowerPoint Presentations as powerful instructional material.

APPLICATION:
As a future teacher, I will keep the basic principles that ET 1 has provided and make it as my firm foundation in the practice of technology integration in the classroom. My purpose is not to build a gap between the traditional teachers and us being the 21st Century teachers but in one way or another, bridge the gap by sharing what I have learned to my fellow teachers in the future. This is because good seeds are intended not to be kept in the container but to be spread on the ground, be tilled, watered, weeded and grown until the right time comes that it will bear much fruit and continue to advance in number. Such seed are the good foundations that ET 1 has provided. By proper training and practice, I believe that we can keep dehumanizing effect of  technology from even being recognized.
